Eh gagu pala kayo eh.

But The Reality Is PricelessA teacher was tutoring a class of students when she relayed a story about a cruise ship capsized while at sea, and on the ship was a couple that managed to make their way to a lifeboat but realized there was only space for one. You’ll never guess what lesson they learned from the story.

A cruise ship met with an incident at sea. On the ship was a couple, after having made their way to the lifeboat, they realized that there was only space for one person left.

At this moment, the man pushed the woman behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself.

The lady stood on the sinking ship and shouted one sentence to her husband.

The teacher stopped and asked, "What do you think she shouted?"

Most of the students excitedly answered, "I hate you! I was blind!"

Now, the teacher noticed a boy who was silent throughout, she got him to answer and he replied, "Teacher, I believe she would have shouted - Take care of our child!"

The teacher was surprised, asking "Have you heard this story before?"

The boy shook his head, "Nope, but that was what my mom told my dad before she died to disease".

The teacher lamented, "The answer is right".

The cruise ship sunk. The man went home and brought up their daughter single-handedly.

Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter found his diary while tidying his belongings.

It turns out that when parents went onto the cruise ship, the mother was already diagnosed with a terminal illness. At the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.

He wrote in his diary, "How I wished to sink to the bottom of the ocean with you, but for the sake of our daughter, I can only let you lie forever below the sea alone".

The story is finished, the class was silent.

The teacher knows that the student has understood the moral of the story, that of the good and the evil in the world, there are many complications behind them which are hard to understand.

Which is why we should never only focus on the surface and judge others without understanding them first.

Those who like to pay the bill, do so not because they are loaded but because they value friendship above money.

Those who take the initiative at work, do so not because they are stupid but because they understand the concept of responsibility.

Those who apologize first after a fight, do so not because they are wrong but because they value the people around them.

Those who are willing to help you, do so not because they owe you anything but because they see you as a true friend.

Those who often text you, do so not because they have nothing better to do but because you are in their heart.

One day, all of us will get separated from each other; we will miss our conversations of everything and nothing; the dreams that we had. Days will pass by, months, years, until this contact becomes rare… One day our children will see our pictures and ask “Who are these people?” And we will smile with invisible tears because a heart is touched with a strong word and you will say: “It was them that I had the best days of my life with.”
Some labelled him as incompetent and insensitive, while others called him a stupid man.

But is the remark a genuine outburst of the heart or plainly a slip of the tongue? Whatever the reason may be, still it does more harm than good in addressing the present traffic woes Metro Manila residents and nearby provinces are daily dealing with.

So Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya is waiting for fatalities before he acts on the tons of problems of DOTC and MRT. His line of reasoning is directly pointing to one thing.... He really does not care with the traffic situation and the safety of the passengers. He lacks genuine compassion, the sincere desire to alleviate other people's misery.

Think about this Sec. Abaya.... what is fatal is loss of work hours for hourly paid workers which is fatal to the health and nutrition of their families. On average, each commuter had to endure 4 hours a day of traffic taking the public transportation caused by your incompetence and lack of vision in handling the affairs of DOTC.

Not burdensome? Sec Abaya, imagine a working mother having to leave home early while her children are still sleeping and arriving late when the children are asleep.

Abaya, what is fatal is what the riding public want to do to you. The riding public has been very patient, overly patient with you. People are fed up of hearing "have patience" over the past five years. All they know is that all the money for the maintenance of MRT-LRT were not being used for that purpose. And they have to suffer every day?

There are many solutions out there, big and small, that would ease this massive problem. It only takes a political will to do what needs to be done to address the issue. Time for action, have the guts, Sec Jun Abaya!

photo: Brad Pitt

It is important to keep promises in life. I mean, why make them if you don’t intend to keep them? This is especially true for those that we make to ourselves. We have to keep them. It is a shame when we fail to.

You can promise yourself many things. You can say that you will eat more nutritional foods, exercise more, stop smoking, drink less alcohol, be more optimistic in life, etc. The list is endless. Usually, when a person makes this promise to himself, it is a sign that he is aware of what he wants out of life, and is willing to change.

All of that is good, but it is best to actually keep those promises. What good is it to make them and fail to keep them for yourself? You have to be the type of person who takes promises, especially those made to oneself, seriously. Very seriously, as in life and death serious. That’s when you can grow and mature as an individual.
"Walang masama roon". (There's nothing wrong with that). As much as we would like to pamper our kids, it’s also important to teach them life lessons. But, it is our obligation not to spoil them.

photo: Pakoy and friends

"Darating ang panahon na matututo na manghingi ng pera sa atin ang ating mga anak para pambili ng pangangailangan niya". (Time will come that your child will asks you for money to buy something). Will you give him/her a hard time and refuse? If so, then you’ll be under his/her control.

You have to teach them something as well as give them the money. Of course there are times when you just give them because you want to, but also make time to teach them the value of the money you are giving them. "Sabihin mo sa kanila na gaano kahirap sa iyo at sa ibang magulang ang kumita ng pera" Tell them how you and other parents earn such money, and make them understand that one day they too will need to make a living for themselves.

Huwag na nating antayin na maging binata at dalaga sila, bago makahawak ng pera". (You ought not hold up until they are old enough to try and get it into their hands). "Hanggat bata pa sila, paliwananagan na natin". (Let them know now while they are young)

Be frank to tell them that you are giving them cash on the grounds that you did that and that to get it. Let them know that if you were not around, they would have needed to work for it. Simply tell them now of the present realities of life.

Meet this happy-go-lucky dabarkads 'Jason and the Argonauts'... And as always, they are having an inuman (drinking session) complete with pulutan (food accompanying drinking sessions).

"Aga naman nyan para sa inuman " (that is too early for a drinking session).

Jason winked at me and in a soft voice uttered "Tito, eto lang ang alam ng mga taong walang silbi" (Uncle, this is what useless people do best).

Without hesitation, I answered back "Don’t ever call yourself useless. As long as you are alive today, you are useful. You just have to find your right place".

"Galing din ako riyan" (I've been there also) and "I know the pain of having nothing to do or seeming unimportant to the people around very well".

"Sumagi rin sa isipan ko noon na wala akong silbi" (This thing got to my head and I started calling myself useless).

But then I realized, I am not!

"Basta't buhay ka, may silbi ka" (As long as you are alive today, you are not useless).

Just because you have not found that right place for you in this world, you call yourselves useless.

"Hanapin nyo lang sarili nyo" (You just have to start looking for it.)

Don’t waste time thinking that you will never be good at anything, and start investing time in getting good at something. That’s how you solve the problem.

"Time management lang yan" . Find what you are good at and gain skills that you will use in life.

God has given each one of us a 'gift'. All you have to do is to unwrapped that gift.

According to reports, passengers of a northbound train were forced to walk along the railway at Santolan station when the coaches suddenly stopped. Apparently, the passengers were "trapped" inside the idle coaches for over 30 minutes before the doors opened.

This is an alarming fact (MRT-3 glitch) that should be look upon by the Senate and be addressed ASAP by DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya. Good thing the train commuters suffered only conveniences. What if the next MRT-3 breakdown will result to death to train riders? Can the government and the public bear the consequences such accident will create?

Another alarming fact, DOTC was granted a 50% fare increase supposedly for repairs and rehabilitation of the train line and other matters; and yet, no significant repair jobs were done except for the replacement of railroad tracks for the past several Sundays.

Where's the money? the riding public is now waiting for Jun Abaya to present them an answer.
Senator Grace Poe for her part has this to say “At the very least, the DOTC must implement all it can at the moment to ease the burden and guarantee the safety of the riding public," and directed directed DOTC officials to submit a full report on the MRT-3's technical glitch Thursday night.

The good lady senator even stressed that to end passengers’ woes, the vowed overhaul of the system and the re-awarding of the maintenance contract must be completed according to timeline.

Sec. Abaya, during the February 2 Senate public services subcommittee on transport hearing led by Poe, presented MRT-3 rehabilitation deliverables with target dates. Is the agency really putting actions to its words?

Another alarming fact exposed here. The riding public doesn’t have any idea at all about how much has been spent on supposed repairs and rehab.

Is Abaya hiding something from the public? your guess is as good as mine. But it is a fact that DOTC is synonymous with corruption!
Another fact, Jun Abaya is now perceived by many as a new rising lord of personal corruption and theft for immoral reasons.

Why?

He dumped Sumitomo in favor of 'favored' service maintenance provider where 'grease money' is involved.
He is cheating the government by stealing from the DOTC through MRT-3 revenues.
Some political observers believed that Abaya is starting to fuel money for Mar Roxas campaign fund this 2016 Presidential election.

To some it up, the public is at a loss, whether the added revenues generated from the fare hike are channeled to MRT-3 rehabilitation works; and not going to his pocket. For now, the public should deal with the frequent MRT-3 service interruptions.

I say, Let's give Jun Abaya the benefit of the doubt until such time he voluntarily opens his mouth to tell the nation the whole truth.
"Yeah, this is an easy job - EXCEPT for the occasional burns!" he laughed.

"You must earn a lot from this," I said, noting that - as the fire dancer claimed - he had been doing this "for years and years now."

"P3,000 per month - give or take," he said. "That's our 'regular' pay."

"That's not a lot. Considering the burning and all."

And then, as he started twirling again: "So don't forget to leave your tip."
Teody has been selling kakanin (snacks) for "pila ka tuig na pud (years and years now)," she said.

In fact, she's been able to send her children to school largely from what she earns from her selling.

"Is it hard doing what you're doing?" I asked her, as she started mixing the noodles with palabok sauce, topping the servings with chicharon (powdered fried pork skin), sibuyas (shallots), and a slice of boiled egg.

She looked up from what she was doing. "Usahay, lisod giyud. Kay rain or shine, mamaligya man mi (At times it's hard. Because rain or shine, we still sell)."

"Kanus-a pud ka magpahulay (And when do you find time to rest)?"

"Pahulay gud! Kayod giyud aron mabuhi ta (What rest are you talking about? We really have to work hard if we want to survive)," she said, managing to offer a smile. She took a deep breath, and then: "Hinuon, gagmay-gagmay lang ni pero makatabang man pud (I may only be selling small items, but they still help)."

"Paano ka kumikita (How do you earn then)?"

"Dahil tulong-tulong sa trabaho, hati-hati sa kita (Because we share the load, we divide the earnings)," she said. Then with a wide smile: "Ganyan naman talaga ang pamilya, 'di ba? Magkasama sa hirap, magkasama sa ginhawa (That's how it is with families, right? You are together in suffering, and together in joy)."
When she was 14, Vien realized that she was "no ordinary beki".

“Before I turned 14, estudyanteng beki lang ako (I was just another gay student),” she recalled. But then she realized, “iba talaga ang experiences ko; hindi maipapaliwanag ng pagiging beki (my lived experiences were not similar to being gay).”

It was at that point that she realized she’s transgender. With the realization, Vien is not only happier, but feels more empowered. This is particularly important for her since she has relatives and friends who remain not accepting of her, refusing to recognize Vien's self-identity. But Vien - now 20 years old - said: “Ito ako. Tanggap ko ako, Bahala na ang iba (This is me. I accept myself. I don’t care what others think).”
Joan Dioso, almost 50, originally came from Cebu Province. He's been working as a beautician in Makati City for as long as he cares to remember. He was around five when he was given the name Joan (legal name: Nemecio Jr.).
If he can share a life lesson, it is to "enjoy to the max!" he says.
Mark, 23, laughed with his friends when they teased him how – as a young gay boy – his father used to palo (hit) him.

“Concerned lang siya sa akin (He’s just concerned with me),” he justified, adding that he feels no bitterness towards his father now as an adult. In fact, having graduated from college already, he wants to find employment overseas “so I can look after my parents.”

“Is it hard having strict parents?” he was asked.

He was quiet for a while. Then: “Hindi ako masyadong gala (I choose not to go out often),” he said, thinking his choosing not to leave the house won’t aggravate his parents.

“Pero dito sa kalsada, naging siya siya (But here in the streets, he becomes the real him),” a neighbor butted in.

Mark laughed again, and then said: “True!”
